Building a Low Carbon Future

The earth’s atmosphere has more carbon in it than at any point in the last three million years. This course will focus on the concepts of carbon analysis and the role of the building sector impacting our environment. We will distinguish the terms commonly used to further develop our carbon literacy, intending to educate how our industry can decarbonize the building sector through tackling embodied carbon.

Benefits:

This course will examine roadmaps for designers and manufacturers to achieve net-zero by 2050.

Learning outcomes:

Participants will review the mechanism and impacts of climate change and the targets in place to limit its damage in the building sector

Understanding the growing importance of embodied carbon emissions throughout a building's lifecycle

Analyzing carbon offsetting and reduction, while evaluating producing low carbon and carbon neutral materials

Review design considerations for reducing whole-of-life embodied carbon and examining Net-zero roadmaps for designers and manufacturers

Healthy materials in the built environment

1 LU/1 HSW for both AIA & IDCEC – 1hr

An intermediate review of best practices and standards for building spaces that keep occupants physically safe from harm and illness while actively promoting health and well-being. Also covered in this CEU presentation are building certifications, and how healthy materials can contribute to the building rating schemes.

Benefits:

Learn about healthy buildings, building rating schemes, and how healthy materials can contribute to these schemes

Interactive Q&A post-presentation

Learning outcomes:

What healthy buildings are, and how they can enhance the well-being of occupants

How materials contribute to a healthy building and occupant’s well-being

How building rating schemes certify health related features and how healthy materials can contribute to these schemes

How healthy materials can contribute to LEED and WELL certification

Fundamentals of room acoustics in common applications

1 LU/1 HSW for AIA only – 1hr

This CEU presentation will explore the intersection between physics and acoustical perception (psychoacoustics), develop fluency with industry-specific standards and terminology, increase awareness of the impact of room acoustics on end-users’ health, safety, and welfare, and apply the principles of room acoustics to architecture and design. We will consider industry standards and best practices that drive acoustical design and review some common acoustical design approaches used to address these standards.

Benefits:

Learn how to design to provide clients with a high performing environment

Interactive Q&A post-presentation
